They are the Campaign Cabinet for the $250-million Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign for Mackenzie Health, a passionate and dedicated team of volunteers who are spearheading the initiative to help build and equip Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital and enhance care at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital.

The 33-member Campaign Cabinet is being led by Chair Greg Sorbara, who is Chancellor of York University, Chair of the Sorbara Group Advisory Board, a former provincial politician and longtime champion of a hospital for Vaughan. “We are asking people to make a gift to something that will be a direct part of their lives, for the rest of their lives and for generations to come,” Greg said. “This Cabinet will inspire the donations that will create lasting legacies and transform health care in southwest York Region.” The members of the Campaign Cabinet represent the region’s enterprises and diversity and all have “a high degree of public commitment”, he added.

The Campaign Cabinet and Foundation team are currently focused on inspiring transformational gift pledges during this “quiet phase” of the multi-year Exceptional Care Belongs Here campaign, which is the largest launched by a community hospital in Canada.

The most significant gift to the campaign to date has been made by Magna International Inc., with its $10-million gift pledge last October to help build and equip the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital.

The Emergency at the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will be named Magna Emergency in recognition of the transformational gift made on behalf of the many Magna employees who live and work in York Region. “Without a doubt, Magna’s support sends a message to our communities that the long-awaited and much needed Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital is a reality and that it’s time to step up to the plate,” Greg said.

“When Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital is completed in 2019, Magna International’s exceptional generosity will ensure our Emergency will be among the best and most technologically advanced in the province, if not Canada,” Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO of Mackenzie Health, said.“It is only fitting that Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital Emergency – the gateway to our hospital—be honoured with the Magna name as a company renowned both for its commitment to innovation and investment in its people and communities,” he added.

According to Foundation President and CEO Ingrid Perry, the leadership demonstrated by Magna’s generous pledge in this early phase of the campaign will inspire philanthropy throughout the community in support of the crucially important hospital project. Campaign momentum is quietly building as the Vaughan hospital project steadily progresses, Glenn Beaumont, Chair of the Mackenzie Health Foundation Board, said. More announcements of gift pledges for $1 million or more will be made in the near future, he added.

The $250-million community campaign supports the local share portion of building Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital – 10 per cent of construction costs, as required by the Province of Ontario – as well as the majority of equipment and furniture. Under Mackenzie Health’s two-hospital model, a portion of the campaign will enhance patient care at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital.
